Pennsylvania Stream Conditions Report
July 23, 2007
Please note these are the latest stream conditions; we are in a heat wave. No rain in the
forcast! Freestone streams throughout the state are suffering. Your best bet is to head to the spring creeks.
Penns Creek Fly Zone: Stream is hovering towards the mid to high 70's; level is low; fly hatches:
a few Sulfurs size 16; a few Cahills size 16; Blue Winged Olives size 18; a few Blue Quills were spotted toward the end of June in some areas;
Isonychia (Slate Drakes) on cloudy days or towards evenings. Small midges size 18-24 in tan and ginger are also on the water. We do not
recommend fishing the stream if the temperature is over 71 degrees F. You will stress the fish too much.
Spring Creek: Terrestrials rule including ants, beetles, crickets and hopper patterns. There are a
few craneflies on some stretches in the morning. Midges in cream, tan, brown, and ginger will attract a few fish. A few scattered sulfurs
in size 16. You'll get a few tricos on some stretches but this is often hit or miss. Nymphing with scuds, cressbugs, and Sawyer
Nymphs will give you action.
Fishing Creek: Temps 64 F. Fish have not been rising. Late Blue Quill size 18, Isonychia size
10-12, BWO size 18 over the next few weeks.
Little Juniata: Stream is still low. Slate Drakes have been spotted on some stretches and a few Sulfurs
at Spruce Creek. But the normal terrestrials will work as will midges. Nymphs always work including the light sulfur in size
16. A few Cahills are also on the waters.
Big Spring: Trout spooky in the clear stream rising for midges, BWO, and a few terrestrials. Also a few sulfurs and tan
caddis size 16 are giving some action. Fishing pressure light.
Falling Spring: Not much happening and contrary to what has been written the tricos are spotty enough to be called a hatch may
be a joke in some sections near the town of Chambersburg. A few sulfurs and terrestrials will work but the trout are not coming up for
much. Fishing pressure is light.
Letort: Some action on sulfurs especially below Peddler's market. A few tricos have been seen there also. Fly
zone tough fishing nothing much rishing. Fishing pressure light to moderate
Yellow Breeches: Low stream conditions. Only good fishing is below Allenberry. Fishing pressure
is heavy. A few sulfurs and cahills around size 16. Midges sizes 18-26 in cream, tan, orange, and black are getting
some action. Small nymphs as always. Terrestrials against the banks; orange fur ants size 16 are hot. Beetles also are
working.
Pine Creek: Low and warm over 80 degrees f in some sections. Pine Creek is suffering from it's
width and constant bright days. Not much happening. We don't recommend any fishing during these times. Stream is lower than it was a
week ago. In fact it's lower than it was when I was there 4 weeks ago and that made me want to cry. Rain headed that way...pray
and hope
