(Newville, PA) Pennsylvania's best limestone spring creek, Big Spring Creek near Newville, PA was recently
gutted by a group of poachers. A large number of trophy fish including wild rainbow trout up to 8 pound were
removed from the stream. A massive number of trophies were removed which has basically destroyed the "gene pool" of
the stream and upsets the spring creek's ecosystem dynamics and population pathways says Gene Macri, Aquatic and
Environmental Scientist who has studied the stream extensively and help to restore it after the state hatchery
closed. Those big trout are big for a reason and their genes have now been removed from the system"
"So many people including scientists, citizen's groups, and others have worked so hard, and in the blink of an
eye 18 years of work was destroyed by criminals who have no idea what it means to be a sportsman, says Macri."
There are layers and layers of residual income from this stream including websites, guiding and fishing
instruction, local and state economies. It should be a felony to remove such fish and these criminals should pay
for all the layers of the economy and residual income that they have destroyed."
Macri is offering a reward of either a day of fly fishing with him or a new high quality spinning equipment for
anyone whose information leads to the arrest and conviction of the poachers. All information will be kept
confidential.
It's almost beyond belief in this day and age that some people could be capable of such crimes against nature,
and those who wish to protect it.
