Fly Fishing Friends
A Photo Essay
A Brief Journey Through The Modern
History of Fly Fishing in
Photos
A Celebration
of Friends and Great Times
Take a trip with me to many streams and many
ages. To when life was a bit simplier...when you were on your
favorite waters with your favorite friends. Here you will find
some of my favorite fishing companions and friends. You will
also find the history of fly fishing in these photos
chronicling the Limestone Fly Fisherman of the Cumberland
Valley. These aren't just any photos. There are photos here
from when the masterful books by Fox and Marinaro were written.
There are photos of rare private moments in fly fishing
history. There are photos of when these famous anglers were
young and we were just kids learning to fly fish.
You find a glimpse of their life story
including Lefty Kreh, Vince Marinaro, Rossy Trimmer, Charlie
Fox, Ed Shenk, Gene Utech, Tommy Thomas, and others. Look
closely at the photos because this is a camaraderie that money
cannot buy and the sands of time cannot erase. You see them in
the moments that many fly anglers could only dream about. As
Robert Traver said, "I think we are passing this way only one
time. and I for one don't want to waste the trip." So don't
waste the trip! Thoreau said, "most men lead lives of quiet
desperation and die with their song still in them." So come
along this trip and remember your own friends and companions
that you have fished with or met streamside. Enjoy as perhaps
Wordsworth said, "the spots in time."
The day is hot and you just hammered them well
how about time for a beer. Well let's make that two beers or
three or.............

Bill Finney with the Samuelson Clan
(Bill, Will and Jeff). These guys are actually more
dangerous than they look! A good day on Penns
Creek.
Okay we all get old. But what did we look
like when we were young. Damn I could have been in a Rock
and Roll Band! Maybe that's why so many females were
attracted to me then. I don't think it was my fly
rod?

Al Lowery
and yours truly in our younger days on Antietam Creek.
Sporting the pipe and that L.L. Bean
look.
Night time has settled on the Letort, the fires
are still burning and the food as usual is delicious. Charlie
Fox and friends discuss jokingly their days on the water. Such
times freeze in our memory and reminds us of the goodness of
life.

The late Dr. Jack
Beck, the late Charlie Fox and Tom Henry enjoy a good
laugh at the Letort Picnic. Those were great
times.
There are many
ways to fly fish but nymphing is by far and away the most
productive. Rivers like Penns Creek separate the men from the
boys in nymph fishing technique. My friend Bill Samuelson
is one of the best at it...we won't mention the weight or will
we!

Bill Samuelson fishing the nymph on Penns
Creek. How many spit shot do you have on? Some guy said he was
missing part of his car bumper?
